Drama Leipzig
Flexible solutions for a complex existing building.
When standard solutions aren't enough
The Schauspiel Leipzig is one of Germany's leading theaters. Behind the scenes, a highly complex technical infrastructure ensures that performances run smoothly night after night.
As part of extensive renovation and modernization efforts, PROTONES was commissioned to upgrade and adapt key technical systems. It quickly became clear that this project would be shaped less by standard processes and more by flexibility, experience, and close collaboration.
The Challenge
Unlike a new construction project, this project had to be carried out within a building structure that had evolved over decades.
Various structural alterations, historical installations, and the partial lack of documentation made planning considerably more difficult. In many cases, technical conditions had to be analyzed on site before decisions could be made.
In addition, there was a clearly defined timeframe for completion. Numerous trades worked simultaneously on different parts of the building, which required close coordination among all parties involved.
The challenge, therefore, lay not only in the technical implementation itself, but above all in developing robust solutions under complex conditions and implementing them on schedule.
Our Approach
From the very beginning, PROTONES has adopted a collaborative and practical approach to projects.
Rather than rigidly adhering to the originally planned solution, technical decisions were continuously refined in collaboration with the management of Schauspiel Leipzig. Regular on-site consultations made it possible to identify challenges early on and develop pragmatic solutions.
PROTONES drew on its experience with complex integration projects and combined it with a high degree of flexibility and a hands-on approach.
The focus was on creating the best solution for the day-to-day operation of the building—not the simplest solution on paper.
Implementation
As part of the project, extensive work was carried out on the building's technical infrastructure.
This included, among other things, the replacement of cable routes, the modernization of existing lighting systems, and the integration of new technical systems into the existing infrastructure.
Since many existing conditions only became apparent during the course of the work, a large portion of the detailed planning was carried out directly on site. This required quick decision-making, close collaboration among all parties involved, and a high degree of flexibility on the part of the project team.
Particularly noteworthy was the close collaboration between the staff of Schauspiel Leipzig and the teams at PROTONES. This ongoing exchange fostered a partnership based on mutual respect, which played a key role in the project’s success.
The result
Despite the challenging circumstances, the project was successfully completed within the planned timeframe.
Today, Schauspiel Leipzig boasts a modernized technical infrastructure that supports day-to-day operations while also laying the groundwork for future needs.
In addition, a partnership developed that was characterized by mutual trust, professional exchange, and collaborative problem-solving.
This project serves as a prime example of how PROTONES successfully overcomes technical challenges even in complex existing buildings—through experience, flexibility, and the ability to work with clients to develop practical solutions.
