A new comedy hotspot with its own technical standards
The Downstairs Comedy Club Berlin has quickly established itself as a new hub for stand-up comedy in the capital. Founded by Felix Lobrecht, the goal was to create a venue that deliberately sets itself apart from traditional comedy clubs—intimate, with high-quality amenities, and equipped to handle professional productions.
PROTONES was commissioned to plan and integrate the event technology and developed a solution that combines sound, lighting, camera, and control into a modern, integrated system.
The Challenge
Comedy thrives on intimacy, timing, and clarity. Every punchline has to land—whether the club is sold out or the performance is being recorded or streamed.
The challenge was to create a high-performance technical infrastructure that preserves the authentic character of a comedy club while meeting professional production standards.
In addition to high-quality sound reinforcement, key requirements included camera technology, lighting design, and intuitive control of the AV system.
Our Approach
PROTONES developed a comprehensive technical concept that was tailored precisely to the club's needs.
The focus was on clear speech intelligibility, flexible production options, and ease of use in day-to-day operations. The technology was not meant to dominate the space, but rather to enhance the room’s atmosphere while delivering reliable quality for shows, recordings, and livestreams.
Implementation
For the sound system, PROTONES opted for an L-Acoustics Syva system, supplemented by L-Acoustics 5XT speakers. This combination ensures clear, powerful, and even sound distribution throughout the club.
L-Acoustics X8 speakers were also installed on stage as monitors to ensure optimal listening conditions for the performers.
For professional recordings and live streams, PROTONES integrated several Sony FX30 cameras as well as Sony FR7 PTZ cameras. These are controlled via the Sony RM-IP500, which allows for efficient operation of the camera and AV systems.
For the lighting, Chauvet Ovation and LiteMat Plus 4 softlights were used. This created atmospheric stage lighting that preserves the character of a comedy club while also providing professional image quality for camera shots.
The result
With its new technical equipment, the Downstairs Comedy Club Berlin now has a professional AV infrastructure for live shows, recordings, and livestreams.
The combination of high-quality sound, sophisticated lighting design, state-of-the-art camera technology, and easy-to-use controls creates the ideal conditions for artists, audiences, and production teams.
